The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
