Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
