The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
